I got bored yesterday waiting for a bus so started playing Trace Memory on the DS. I'd forgotten how fun point-and-click adventure games could be, not to mention the puzzles in this are incredible. Sure, it came out in 2005, but I haven't seen anyone use the DS's hardware link Cing does (blow in the microphone to remove dust! Angle the two screens so you reflect one off the other to figure out a clue!).
Also, the 13/14 year-old protagonist is an adorable white-haired girl named Ashley, who is the correct mix of stubborn and snarky and confused and curious. Not to mention the ghost boy D whom she meets and follows her around is an excellent voice of sanity whenever she starts angsting a little too much, and reels her back in. (Not to say she doesn't have reason to angst. I mean, the premise is that Ashley spontaneously got a package in the mail from her father, whom she's thought dead for the past 11 years. Pretty much ever since he left her toddler self on her aunt's doorstep. And now he wants a reunion right on the eve of her 14th birthday. Yeah, I'd be a little angsty too.)
Apparently, there is a sequel on the Wii, which looks gorgeous from the videos and screenshots. It is out in Japan. I've seen release dates for it in PAL territories. If there isn't an NA (or NTSC, because hello importing) release, I shall be very cross with Nintendo.
