Oh all-knowing flist:

Anyone have any "vidding for dummies" links for those just starting out? Or any recommendations for free video processing software or file format converters?

No, I'm not actually trying to learn how to vid. I'm trying to do video editing for a class presentation on Monday. Yeah, I hate my life too.

Are you sure? The Mac end of things has detailed tutorials for free and cheap stuff starting with ripping and going from there, with only one side note for if you are using Final Cut. I admit I haven't really looked at the PC part of the website, but I'd assumed it was the same.

Hopefully one of the links I offered is helpful.

Have a Mac lab? Hah. Hah. Haaah. We have Sun machines and Solaris in our computer labs. Actually, our computer labs run a version of Linux. Even the Media Lab mostly uses Windows or Linux boxes, with a few Macs here and there, but those are not for public use.

Wow. You are now the only university I've ever seen that doesn't have a large mac-using population and doesn't have macs available in on-campus labs. I'm really surprised the media lab doesn't use Mac - it's generally considered superior for video type work.

Well, the first link was Final Cut Pro for the Windows side. I might have looked in the wrong place.

Well, we do have a significant Mac-using population, but it's all personal computers. And my friends are mostly mechEs or EEs, and more importantly gamers, so they're really leaning towards Windows or Linux.

As for the Media Lab, see, it actually does less with video stuff. It's a lot more programming and engineering than media manipulation. But yeah. I don't know of a "Mac lab" anywhere. Actually, I know of one Mac desktop on-campus.
