RepliCarter has just managed to short-circuit my brain.

This has happened in a way that would be incomprehensible to anyone who has not also played Persona 4.

(Hint: It is way too easy to hear Sam yelling "YOU'RE NOT ME!" and RC saying "I am a Shadow -- the True Self.")

Holy shit, IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW.

I CAN SEE THROUGH TIME. MY GOD, IT'S FULL OF STARS.

Close, but not quite. In Persona 4, the repressed aspects of people are able to take a physical form in a separate realm from the "real world" that's leaking into the "real world". (You access the other world via the TV) When confronted with their "shadow", the repressed and buried parts of themselves, the person must accept their Shadow, or be killed by it.

Usually, the person in question tries to reject this darker/repressed aspect of themselves, and the Shadow tries to kill them and there's a boss fight to prevent it. After beating the crap out of the Shadow, the person generally goes "okay, yeah, I really hate this part of myself, but I can't grow unless I confront and accept it as part of me."
