ultranos: Actual MIT hack of roadsign. "MASS AVE BRIDGE CLOSED / SUNDAY 04/22/07 6AM-3PM / TO APPEASE GODZILLA" (have you appeased godzilla today?)
To everyone having bad weather: Er...sorry? It's Campus Preview Weekend and the Institute turned on the weather machine to entice the unsuspecting pre-frosh to come. You know, by making it seem like New England actually has nice, non-batshit weather. However, it IS the weather, and no one understands the weather, and turning on the weather machine probably screwed it up for other people.

Um. Yeah. *tries to look innocent with the 70F, sunny forecast for tomorrow* Sorry?

On the other hand, it's CPW and I'm hiding because omg, little pre-frosh running around looking wide-eyed and innocent. I feel like I can corrupt them with crankiness just by standing within 20 feet.

But! Four-day weekend, because the Institute decided to slap on a suicide-prevention day (or something) on the day after Patriot's Day. I am not complaining. This means I actually get to, you know, DO STUFF.

You know, I generally have a fair bit of respect for this Institute of yours.

But if the snow here ruins my plans when I'm at Mudd in two weeks I will convince them to look East and do something worse that stealing a cannon :P

Nuh, uh, we've got plenty of our own. And a "no pranking art" policy after an unfortunate incident involving a prank the same day the artist was visiting campus.

(though we'd probably get cranky if something happened to Rusto - the metal sculpture donated that was "guaranteed not to rust" and, well, that's just a CHALLENGE, don't you see?)

That totally happens at my alma matter, too. They turn on the nice weather for the preview weekends, and lure poor innocent southerners to their rainy, gloomy doom.

Georgia adjusted her scarf, wrapped her coat more solidly around her, and stepped outside. She began to sweat almost immediately, and blinked as a brilliant sun thrust light onto the green, perfect grass of the campus lawns.

"What the hell?" she asked, watching as another student--bundled up like her--put a foot cautiously on the grass, and almost sank in up to his knees. There was a reason the grass was perfect, after all, and it had everything to do with the fact that the winter rains drenched the ground until it became nearly as dangerous to walk across the lawns as it was to cheat on a final in Professor Iden's class.

Someone bumped into her from behind, a hand coming around her shoulders helping to steady her. "It's preview weekend," Laura said, squeezing one of Georgia's shoulders and leaning in that way that should have infuriated her, but somehow just made her feel happy. Laura had that effect on people. Georgia shrugged off Laura's arm and turned around.

Laura was dressed in a stunning, yellow, sleeveless dress, though she was carrying a sweater with her. She had obviously prepared--shaved her legs, painted her toenails. Georgia couldn't have duplicated her look if she tried--she lived in jeans and T-shirts the whole year round.

"Preview weekend?" she asked, flipping open the buttons on her coat. All around them, students were doing the same thing, shucking their heavy winter coats. Some even went back into the dorms, presumably to change.

Laura waved at a few of her friends as they came out of their dorms, all of them gaping at her and then looking at the bright blue, cloudless sky. She shrugged. "Happens every year," she said. "Unending rain, a hint of snow, more rain, and then..." she gestured around at the lawns. "Never fails."

Georgia gave her outfit another look. "You...prepared."

Laura said, "Of course I did." Her tone made it extremely obvious. "Why waste three whole days of glorious weather in the middle of March?"

"Why indeed," Georgia said dryly.

Laura smiled. "Come on. Day's a-wasting!"

Georgia finished removing her coat and trailed after Laura to their first class.

Later in the day, when there were a few hundred tiny-looking prospects milling around, someone found a patch of lawn that was slightly elevated, and thus, dry enough for ultimate Frisbee. Georgia pounded a few freshmen into the slightly mud-like ground, scored a few goals, and then watched more freshmen slip around. She sighed happily. It had been an excellent day. Both of her classes had been outside, and since it was a Friday, she had had plenty of time to enjoy the sun.

She closed her eyes and tilted her head up, enjoying the warmth on her face.

Someone settled next to her. "Two more days of this," Laura said, sounding just as happy as Georgia felt.

"Isn't it strange it's always the same weekend?" Georgia said lightly. "It's a little suspicious, actually." She remembered her own preview weekend now. It had been bright and sunny then, too.

Laura shrugged. "It's the admissions office. They do what they need to."

Georgia laughed and tossed a piece of grass at Laura. "Oh, come on." It was just a coincidence, after all. There were probably plenty of rainy preview weekends, too.

Laura laughed, but Georgia noticed it didn't quite reach her eyes.

"You gonna sit the whole game out?" one of the freshmen called. Georgia looked at the lawn, the sun, and the sky and got to her feet, forgetting the look she'd seen.

There was weather to enjoy.

back a few years ago when I was still in college, we used to LOVE the pre-frosh weekends because they were so easy to torment! We'd put one of our youngest looking people in the group with the pre-frosh tours and their parents and then we'd kidnap her right out of the bunch in this huge pickup truck one of us owned. The looks on the faces of the parents were priceless--but the kids loved it (which is why the school never did anything to stop us)... While South Carolina had much more predictable weather, whenever it did decide to get cold, we'd turn the fountain outside of our administration building into a huge jello mold for those pre-frosh weekends... *sigh i miss those weekends!*
