holdouttrout gave me "G". Which...not immediately obvious. So, hooray, video games.
1. Gordon Freeman (Half-Life) Okay, he's an MIT grad, with a PhD in Theoretical Physics, who was working at a research lab called Black Mesa when the apocalypse happened. In the beginning, he's trying to save humanity with only his wits and a crowbar. Do I really have to explain more of why I like this character?
2. GLaDOS (Portal) Another character from Valve Software. With the exception of the gun turrets, she has the only dialog in the game. And, oh god, the slow reveal of her absolute psychosis is brilliant, and the revelation that SHE killed all the people in the research facility by releasing deadly neurotoxin was just chilling. (GLaDOS also facilitated RepliCarter's takeover of my brain, what with my listening to her dialog for hours on end.)
3. Ghaleon (Lunar: Silver Star Story (Complete)/Lunar 2: Eternal Blue (Complete)) Even though he's never in your party except for about five minutes, and in fact is the main villain for the first game, Lunar 1 and 2 are really Ghaleon's story. He's introduced in the first game as one of the Four Heroes, and really does initially live up to that title. The thing is, before the game starts, he witnesses the Goddess Althena deciding to become mortal. Ghaleon basically believes that this is a mistake, and that the people of the world still need their goddess. So his goal is to restore the goddess by kidnapping her human form and forcing her to retake her immortality. Unfortunately, this process kind of screws up the world. Ghaleon gets defeated at the end of Silver Star, but 500 or so years later in Eternal Blue, he's been resurrected by the Dark God Zophar. Once again, he's your antagonist, EXCEPT at the end game, you find out he's been subverting the god who brought him back from the dead and gets the heroes to their final showdown even though the Dark God kills him for this. Because of his actions, though, he's redeemed himself. He's a fascinating character, because he's such a sympathetic villain. He honestly tried to do what he saw as best for the world, and the entire story shows his fall from grace and eventual redemption. He also had the most hilarious voice actor (in the outtakes) in the entire game.
4. GIR (Invader Zim) The insane, possessing questionable intelligence little robot that has some of the greatest lines of the show. Well, when the character is introduced as "it's not stupid! It's advanced!", you know you're getting an...interesting character. GIR seems like a harmless, idiotic little robot that disguises itself in a green dog costume, except when its eyes go red and becomes scarily competent. Luckily for Earthlings, this doesn't last long. Plus, GIR is adorable looking.
5. Grodin, Peter (SGA) I liked Grodin when he was on Atlantis. He was competent at his job, to the point of excellence. He was tech support but also was good enough that he was the one to help McKay get the Ancient satellite online. Not only that, but he was the one, not any of the "big names" on Atlantis to hold off the Wraith, and sacrificed himself to save everyone, showing that, yes, Atlantis was staffed by some of the "best and brightest"...even in their technical support staff.
