ultranos: kino standing, staring ahead (even my sleep is dangerous)
I, um, think I'm going to Dragon*Con. (It's the weekend before term starts, so it'll be a nice last bit of vacation before the insanity of term starts again.)

A couple of friends and I are looking into hotels (and really need to remember to buy a membership for it). The only con I've been to is Anime Boston, so I never had to worry about anything other than a membership, so I don't actually know how this game works. It'll be all kinds of Fun.

I... have no idea how large Anime Boston is, actually. But DC? Is big. really big.

AB this year was about 15,000. (Unfortunately, whoever was in charge of registration logistics needed to be taken out behind the building and shot, because the at-the-door line was upwards of 8 hours long.)

aha. Then you're set. And pre-reg, because DC isn't that bad? But it's still less hassle.

I recommend the Baymont, since I'm sure the three con hotels are sold out on rooms. The Baymont is two blocks from the main action, but it's not a bad walk (it's downhill on the way home, which, at four in the morning, is the BEST THING EVER).

At least. I think it's a Baymont? Bleh. I don't remember right now. Sorry.

Ah, cool. I'll look into it. I walk pretty much everywhere these days, so a two block walk at 4am isn't exactly daunting. :) (I figured the three con hotels would be sold out.)

Thanks!

It's less a matter of distance and more a matter of it being downtown Atlanta, where there are not particularly savory people on the streets at four am. Even with freaky con people around.

*nod* Right. I suppose the correct answer is "don't go alone" and "please don't be stupid". (I've done downtown Boston and Cambridge after midnight, but I definitely see your point. There are some unsavory people around late at night and it's just stupid to not be careful.)

YAY!

Last year they opened up hotel rooms at con prices on and off all summer - so we managed to reserve ours near the end of July. Also, check the dragon*Con LJ community because sometimes people are looking to get rid of rooms they can no longer keep.

Hee. I'm kind of excited. It all kind of fell in together in the last day.
("Hey, remember that thing we talked about before the end of term ate our lives?"
"Yeah..."
"..."
"So. Wanna go to Dragon*Con?"
"Okay, sure."
"Alright then.")

Oh, good point about the LJ comm. I did think of that. And nice to know about hotel rooms opening later. I'll mention that to the person who said she'd look at hotels (because I've never done that sort of thing before).

YAY!

I mean, I don't promise that the hotel thing will work that way THIS year

(apparently there are football(?) games in town this year on the weekend and some fans learned of the dragon*con room codes or something)

But I'd suggest patience.

Dragon Con is pretty damn awesome. I stayed with Abyssis (see above) and she was nailed a hotel room in late July so you should be fine.

Of course the Stargate Panel doesn't look all that interesting to me, but I did love meeting LJers. That was the best part, IMO.

I know two of the people I'm going with are big media studies type people. I kinda want to bring popcorn. :)

I think the best part is the potential to meet LJers too.
