There was once a time when I swore I'd never write fanfic. I thought about it a lot. And, if we're going to be technical, I broke that a long time ago, because one of the first things I seriously wrote for pleasure was a horrible self-insert Sonic the Hedgehog fic. Thankfully, the only other party to see said fic was my mother and I was roughly eight years old.
I hardly think it counts.
But I digress. I have, many times, thought about actually writing fanfic. I won't lie and say that the ideas have not been there. For some reason, the will to actually write it never materialized, and I've fought it off for numerous fandoms, including various incarnations of Final Fantasy, the Lunar series, and other things. There was a Lunar metafic that actually did start getting written, but it never got past a few paragraphs and the rest of it got reworked into other things.
I guess, and this especially became true after I envisioned XAOS, I always saw fanfic as a stepping stone to original works. And since I came up with XAOS when I was 14 and have been slowly building it for over the last seven years, I could always ignore the worse of the fanfic urges and redirect those writing urges onto original works. Some slipped, which explains the original Xenogears crossover in XAOS:Travelers, but that got reconned and now it's completely written out.
Because I never plan on becoming a serious author or writer and this is all just a hobby, I don't know if I'm being elitist. I read fanfic; it's a guilty pleasure. And I have read some excellent works that are better than some published works. I read Strike Fiss's Higher Learning (NGE) or his Omoi (Sailor Moon), or Guardian's Go Not Gently (FFIX), just for example, and I find myself wanting to make sure XAOS is at that level. How the hell does that work?
So what does all this mean? I should get off my bloody high horse and write whatever comes to me? Maybe. I've found myself becoming more and more sucked in by the Stargate series. And, if I'm totally honest with myself, this might very well be the fandom that I finally cave for and write. Is this bad? Am I compromising myself? Honestly, no. The series, the story, and the characters are all strangely compelling, and they feel like they could integrate in the XAOSverse if rewritten, but in doing so, they'd lose a lot. (This is what prevented me from doing FFVIII. Anjirousu Targasa's character somehow, at one point, became this scary mixture of Squall Leonhart and Fujin, and I didn't want to touch FFVIII for fear of what could happen.)
What prompted this rant? Well, to be honest, I got smacked in the head by an idea for SG-1.
Ever since I tasted the beer named after him, I've become rather curious about Eliot Ness, and subsequently The Untouchables. Also known as the man who put away Al Capone during Prohibition. As a joke, in a Stargate campaign I'm writing, SG teams all have various nicknames. I entertained the idea of SG-1 having the nickname "The Untouchables".
That led to the assumption of "Jack O'Neill = Eliot Ness".
...and one thing led to another. SG-1 as a team, hand-picked from various police departments, the FBI, and perhaps other government agencies, to take down the System Lords who are now various mob bosses. Carter as a slick, young FBI agent; Daniel as a brilliant analyst for a police department or other government agency (say, immigration or something); Teal'c as a street cop who's father was in the mob and got killed, so he'd like nothing better than to see them all get locked away; and so on and so forth. IT WRITES ITSELF. I do not understand this.
Will I actually write this? Hard to say. It's doing its damnedest to worm its way inside my head and seems to have no intention of dislodging itself. However, this would take a metric fuckton of research, because I refuse to do something halfassed. The prospect of research for a writing project, especially when it's not for a game or XAOS, is always a hurdle.
So, this will be called The Stargate Fic I Am Not Writing. We'll see how that goes.
