Ignoring the typo, the statement of kneecaps being a privilege came out of my university's American Jiu-jitsu club, as a sort of joking way of expressing extreme displeasure. (Of course, the first rule of AJJ is that you avoid confrontation whenever possible, so joking is all it is) As the case is that I actually do have crappy knees, the statement works on extra levels because fully-working legs are something I miss dearly. And then I found the perfect pissy!Teyla-face to make it work.
This has been my default icon for a very long time. The character is Cecilia Adelhyde, from the original PlayStation release of Wild ARMs. She's a the party mage (black AND white magic, yo) and is the requisite princess who takes no crap from anyone. The cap I use is her after she cut off her hair as a response to people trying to get her to stay in the castle and not go gallivanting off to save the world. Her response is to swipe a male party member's sword, slice off her hair, and say "suck it", while her dying father laughs in the background in that "that's my girl!" sense.
It was the first console RPG I played to completion, and Cecilia pretty much kicks ass in 328 ways before breakfast.
One of the mantra's I try to live by is "keep walking". I had been going through some rough times, and wanted to find something that fit this feeling. The photo is some stock photo I found online. But the image of a human figure just walking on the side of the road into the fog was exactly the image I wanted: don't know where the road is going, don't know what's ahead, but you're going to keep going.
I'm happy with how it works for me without any words at all.
It's a kendōka in full bōgu in the middle of a stike (Dô-bu, or torso strike, I believe). I got into kendo while writing my undergraduate thesis, and it pretty much saved my sanity. Unfortunately, I can't currently go back to the university club so I don't practice right now. But I love the form and the ritual of the martial art. It's not as practical as American Jiu-jitsu, nor the same rituals as fencing. It's more meditative for me, and it's actually a martial art I can do with my bad knee. But it made me feel more alive on 3 hours of sleep than 5 cups of coffee, it cleared my head and made me stop thinking, and I miss it a lot.
Ah, Duckcat. Everyone always is baffled by the Duckcat. Almost 6 years ago, a friend and I were writing a LARP, low on sleep, high on stress, and amazingly punchy as we were sitting in a university computer cluster writing our game. And he found this image manipulation, showed it to me, and it was so absurd we could not stop laughing for like 20 minutes. And then we got the bright idea to use it as a placeholder image to test some code. And started cracking up again whenever the code worked.
So Duckcat is basically there for whenever I need a good laugh at something completely absurd.
If you want to be memed, comment with "enthalpy" and I'll pick five of your icons for you to discuss.

(Enthalpy is a thermodynamics term for the total amount of energy in a system. It was the first word that popped into my head for a random word.)
