I finally figured out that, in addition to the new TiVo set the apartment acquired, we also apparently get HBO. (I have a problem getting my memos) So I finally caught up on Game of Thrones. I'd been introduced to the first episode a few weeks ago at a Special Edition of Bad Sci-Fi Night (that edition had GoT, Camelot, and Legend of the Seeker, and the room agreed the world really needs an Arthurian series where Morgan le Fay is the hero). And then I got browbeaten encouraged by a friend to actually freaking catch up, because GoT is actually good.
And it is!
-GoT can easily be explained by Assassins' Guild metaphors: The problem with the adults of House Stark is that they are either a) played by freshman, or b) played by character roleplayers who generally put "NO POLITICAL PLOTS" in all caps on their apps. And then got Cersei and Littlefinger played by Master Assassins. THIS IS GOING TO END POORLY FOR CERTAIN PEOPLE.
-Speaking of the adults of House Stark, both Ned and Cat would be quite at home and correct if they were in another fantasy universe where "honor" actually meant something. Like Tortall! They'd be great in Tortall. Unfortunately, they're in Westeros. I think they are slowly figuring this out. Maybe.
-I only read less than half the first book. I was not fond of Cersei in the book as far as I read. Now? Either she is much more awesome, I have a giant girlcrush on Lena Headey, or both, but I kinda want to keep waving the Cersei Is Awesome flag.
-Arya and Bran totally won the Stark Genetic Lottery, as they are clearly the two siblings who managed positive INT and WIS scores. They were either adopted, or take after Uncle Benjen. Sansa and Robb clearly put too much into CHA. Rikkon is six.
-Speaking of Arya, her actress gives a great performance with the getting across "there is something bad happening...but I am ten." So does Bran's for that matter. I'll take "Piercing Logical Questions and Observations That Make Adults Uncomfortable" for 500, Alex.
-The Dothraki plot is making me do *headtilt* a lot. On the other hand, Dany apparently found her spine. *waves flag*
-I play too many video games. The blood and hack-and-slash fights are completely not shocking and are more making me wonder how many bloodpacks a particular death used. I guess I decapitated more people in Dragon Age: Origins and am thus immune.
There's also the slightly weirdness going on in my head with my original low-fantasy fic Wintermarch where the titular march state and the Citadel are vaguely similar to Winterfell and the Wall. They are not the same, but I can see parallels. Eh.
