ultranos: XKCD comic: existentialism vs. super soaker. Super soaker wins. (existentialism is dangerous)
1. I think a side-effect of going so deep into term-mode and being so utterly focused on finishing is that I'm definitely reaching back into my old modes of fannish interaction and media consumption. Well, I've been aware of this for some time, but I'm actually vocalizing it now. Sorry guys, but with Leverage on break, there's nothing live-action on TV that I'm excited about.

I was talking to [livejournal.com profile] abyssinia4077 on Friday about it briefly, and well, when everyone else was watching Star Trek (er, the newer ones, not TOS), or Babylon 5, or whatever else was Fannishly Important during the 90s and early 00s, I was playing video games and watching anime and reading SF&F and manga. My reference pools are so totally skewed off what seems to be the norm for a lot of people on my flist.

So when I say I'm reaching back into old modes, I'm meaning I'm eating up manga and anime and video games, and lurking around the edges of fandoms. I'm just not feeling hugely "fannish" these days. Rather, I'm back to feeling tentative about looking for people interested in those fandoms. Sometimes, I wonder if it was an utter fluke that I somehow had a temporary fit of insanity and made a comment on someone's journal, who then took pity on the poor n00b who'd somehow survived in the wilds of FF.net and pointed her towards sanity. Turns out, I'm scared to do that process again.

Yeah, sometimes, I'm a wuss.

2. Had to read part of Pluto by Naoki Urasawa for class. Now I want to read some of his other works, like 20th Century Boys. He turned Astro Boy into a futuristic film noir! Yes, I know that genre makes no sense, but that's the only way to describe it. It's awesome.

2b. Maybe reading 20th Century Boys will help me regain my dignity for being delighted by the utterly guilty pleasure crack that is Mahou Sensei Negima. *hangs head in shame* I swear to god, I read it for the plot, characters, and fight scenes. I SWEAR. (I also swear that you could read the characters page on TVTropes and be able to identify which characters I read it specifically for. *hangs head further in shame* I have types, people. TYPES! And I'm powerless to stop them from forcing me to indulge.)

[livejournal.com profile] windstar127, you may commence laughing at me.

3. Apparently, instead of writing my however-many WIPs for 'gateverse I have, my brain is running around gleefully poking at two of my original fic 'verses, including the one that was created, uh, 10 years ago. (Wait, it's 10 years old? Holy shit!) I have no idea. But I'm pleased that one might have finally managed to shed its pseudo-religious deus ex machina and make it more about self-determinism than, well, a redux of the Book of Job...IN SPACE! (You think I'm kidding...) Once again, I prove to myself that I was an utter idiot at age 17.

Maybe one day, I'll actually write the books for this 'verse. (If you're particularly curious, I have written some short stories in this 'verse. They're under the xaos tag.)

I'm sorry to hear I'm not the only one with insomnia. may you recover before I do.

it takes the hand of a master to write Job again - that makes two now: you and Heinlein. I applaud you.

have nice days and be well.

Well, the Job thing got tweaked. I had it nearly workable in my head for years, but it doesn't really fit the themes of the rest of the 'verse, so there was always something I was slightly unhappy with about it.

I hope all's well with you.

Hey, it was totally an awesome day in my life when you decided to de-lurk and comment. I'm glad you had your Stargate fluke so I could get to know you and switching back to your old modes of fannish interaction isn't going to get rid of me, I'll just keep grinning at you enjoying it and nodding along completely confused :)

(I mean, I'm still hoping you'll finish some of those SG-1 WiPs you torture me with but the original stuff you've let me read has been pretty damn awesome)

Well, that's good to know that I won't get rid of you. You're like a bad penny! Except not. :P

And who knows? Maybe I'll find something more normal? :P

(Oh, I want to finish them. I just haven't been in the right brain-space lately. So they kinda just look at me mournfully.)

I am EXACTLY like a bad penny :P
It's not like Stargate was the only thing we have/had in common.

And I don't think either of us (or anyone in fandom) can really be properly coined "normal"

(I know the feeling. I haven't even left Stargate brainspace and I'm still having trouble with the writing brainspace and have WiPs looking mournfully at me)

True!

And yeah, maybe not "normal". But I have no idea what other word I want there.

(I just don't know. It's not because it's closed canon, because heck, the vast majority of things I'm into are designed as closed canon, and there's a whole lot less of it than SG-1/SGA. And yeah, Sam Carter = still awesome, but...I just don't know.)
