ultranos: kino standing, staring ahead (the world in my hand)
I'm asking for your advice.

I am considering getting an eBook reader. I know, I know. Stop the damn presses, ultranos is about to do something she swore up and down she was "meh" about.

ANYWAY. eBook readers. The logic here is that, since I'm going to be writing a thesis soon, it'd be nice to have all these reference papers and whatnot in one place. And not have to cart around a stack of paper 5 inches tall. And not have them cluttering up my computer screen when I'm flipping through them and MATLAB and whatever all the time.

Now, I know that the technology really isn't there yet to be awesome about journal articles with figures in PDF. However, I'm looking for something that doesn't fail too badly at it. I figure if it can do some black-and-white graphs or diagrams, we can work something out.

Since I'm a student, I'm looking for something vaguely affordable (under $300 is great. Under $250 is even better). So far, I've looked at the Kindle, Barnes & Noble's Nook, Sony's PRS-600, and the COOL-ER. I'm open to any other suggestions. Or other advice.

I've heard good things about the Sony e-reader. I know someone just got an i-touch that I guess has a reader built into it? I dunno.

Oh, and I was just reading this blog at the washington post. (which actually recommends holding off on buying an e-reader, but there was some cool points.

A friend of mine has a Sony e-reader, and she loves it. Another friend has a Kindle and he seems fairly happy with it. So uh?

the Dear Author romance blog just recently in-depth reviewed the two new Sony readers (the Touch and the Pocket).

I've been looking at the Cool-Er myself, because it supports the widest range of formats (including html), but the reviews I've read have said the construction is a bit flimsey for the price. Otherwise, I think Sony supports the next widest range.

Engadget (http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/09/interead-cool-er-3g-e-reader-announced-adds-wireless-to-the-mix/) seems to like the Cool-Er. You really can't beat the price.

I'm sort of leaning towards Sony or them, actually. I keep hearing conflicting reports on PDF compatibility on the Kindle, and I really need PDFs.
