Archive Fic: [SG-1] Still Alive

Title: Still Alive
Author: [livejournal.com profile] ultranos
Rating: PG
Notes: written for [livejournal.com profile] abyssinia4077's LeapGate back in February/March for the prompt "Sam, Daniel: Science". I only just got around to archiving it here. My bad.

"Oh, you have got to be kidding me."

Daniel studiously avoided looking at Sam and instead focused on the not-white walls. Unfortunately, that was about all there was to note about them. Most were a dingy, off-white color, as if they were trying to be gray and failing miserably. They were metal, and completely devoid of any type of writing, except for large, helpful signs that pointed out various ways a person could die while in the room.

They were, in fact, entirely unhelpful.

He ignored Sam's irritated muttering and moved further into the room. His footsteps echoed ominously. Looking around, he saw various platforms and drops around the room. Straining his neck, he could see what might be an exit on the far wall, way above his head.

Sam stepped up next to him, also surveying the room. "I think we're supposed to solve some kind of puzzle to get to the door up there," he said, pointing.

Sam nodded, and then peered down into the drop about ten feet away that ran along the wall, with a series of platforms suspended above it. About fifteen feet down, the pit was filled with a greenish liquid. Sam frowned, dug around in her pockets and found a half-crushed candy bar. Without a word, she dropped it off the edge. When it reached the liquid, it did not so much splash as it did sizzle and pop in a rather disturbing fashion.

"That's acid."

"I never liked Kit-Kats anyway."

----

Daniel eyed Sam dubiously as she stuck her head into a wall. They were as far from the drop into a pool of acid as physically possible, and Sam had pulled out her Leatherman to pry off a wall panel.

"What do you think the purpose of this room is?" came a muffled voice from inside the wall.

"Maybe a testing chamber of some sort?"

"Maybe."

"Well, we might have been able to find out, but..." Daniel wisely shut up as Sam pulled her head out of the wall to glare at him.

"Like you didn't want to do the same thing."

After they had determined the liquid was acid, a pleasant-sounding voice had reverberated throughout the chamber, thanking them for their participation and that their progress was being monitored before repeating.

The speaker had met its end after the tenth repetition from the business end of Sam's P-90.

He sighed as Sam stuck her head back into the guts of the wall. Until Sam found something, whatever it was she hoped to gain by disassembling a wall, he was feeling a bit useless. Except for what was in their tac vests or their weapons, there was nothing else in the room. Not even rope. And with the acid in the drops and various metal cubes hanging precariously around the room, he wasn't exactly feeling the need to try running some demented obstacle course that thought it was a logic puzzle.

"Oh, I don't believe this."

He looked down to see Sam standing up with a huge grin on her face. In her fist was a tightly rolled sheaf of papers.

"Is that...?"

"They left the blueprints in the wall."

"We cannot possibly be this lucky."

He took the papers and unrolled them. They were, in fact, blueprints. To the entire room, including what was on the other side of the paneled walls. It was written in another language. One that he could read.

"Okay, we can possibly be this lucky."

---

Translating the blueprints was quick work, and soon Daniel found himself and Sam scaling up the inside of the walls.

"You know," said Sam conversationally from above his head, "if that was a testing chamber, I'm pretty sure we failed."

"I don't know. I thought you were a fan of creative problem solving."

He couldn't see her grin, but he knew it was there from her quiet laughter. "I don't think they expect this," he continued.

They climbed a bit more before Sam held out her hand and stopped. "I think I hear voices," she muttered quietly. He strained to hear, and could pick out muffled voices. Two of them sounded familiar and very angry.

Sam craned her head backwards so she could share a grin with Daniel. Oh, they knew that voice very well.

They climbed as quickly as they could, until they reached a grate above their heads. Sam tested it quickly and determined that it could be forced out. Daniel braced her from below as she shifted and kicked the grate out.

"What the?!"

They were both able to poke their heads out of the grate at the same time. Daniel was pretty sure they both were wearing shit-eating grins as they looked up at Jack, who was staring at them incredulously. Off to the side, Teal'c was glaring at the natives dressed in official-looking robes.

"Hi, sir."

"Daniel! Carter!"

The natives were gaping at them in outright shock. "But, but, how is it that you're still alive? No one survives the Chamber!"

Daniel and Sam exchanged glances as Teal'c helped pull them from the floor. "Creative problem solving."

You are a wonderful person. Thank you again.

eeek! devilish evil natives!!

"I never liked Kit-Kats anyway."--he might have been heartbroken if it was his Fifth Avenue bar, but this line and the leaving of blueprints in the wall is absolutely precious!!

[identity profile] ultranos-fic.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Those tricksy natives!

So, true story: some people I know were exploring the sub-basements and such of various buildings on campus. They were poking around a certain one with very peculiar architecture that had been recently completed. They stumbled upon a roll of the blueprints to the building, just laying there. The construction workers had apparently just left them. So, being a bunch of crazy engineers, they absconded with the blueprints...and then just kind of threw them in the corner of a kitchen in their dorm.

(I know some of those blueprints ended up being "drop cloth" when a friend was painting her room. :) )

[identity profile] samantilles.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
the engineer-wannabe in me cringes at the fate of the blueprints. We had our share of old decrepit buildings at my college in which to explore, but no such treasure was ever found. Although oddly I do have blueprints to my high school when I did a mathematical cost estimating job for them as a senior (I was cool enough to be a math geek before I found my true love of history and political science...)

[identity profile] ultranos-fic.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it was kind of sad about the fate of the blueprints. The person who used them as such, who is also an engineer, absolutely detests the building. It's actually a grossly expensive failure of usable architecture in a lot of students' eyes, and, well, a lot of the people who have to use the building hate it. Hence, feeling vindictive enough to use the blueprints as drop cloth.

I know there is a least one other complete copy of the blueprints, somewhere. These just happened to be a copy.

That's really cool!

I don't suppose this building happens to be called "Lerner Hall" would it?

If not, then there seems to be an alarming explosion of badly designed buildings on university campi.

PS: Btw, very very cute story :p. Enjoyed it muchly! Thank you for sharing. :)

[identity profile] ultranos-fic.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, no. The building in question would be the Stata Center (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stata_Center), designed by Frank Gehry, for an absurdly huge amount of money. The acoustics and lighting in the lecture halls is less-than-stellar, the interior is vaguely impossible to traverse, and I hear in some areas, heating is special.

And it leaks.

Thank you for enjoying the story!

Hahahahaa! Hi, Portal!!

(Hee, this fic makes me grin.)

[identity profile] ultranos-fic.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I love Portal SO MUCH. *uses appropriate icon*

(It's Sam-and-Daniel vs. GLaDOS!)

[identity profile] kalquessa.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
SG-1 vs. GLaDOS is one of those crossovers that doesn't get nearly enough love.

[identity profile] ultranos-fic.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
It needs more love!
(I'm trying to think of OTHER EXAMPLES. And failing miserably. *sadface*)

[identity profile] kalquessa.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I've wanted to write one of my own forever. I wish I were better at the game, that might make writing a fic easier. As it is, I may need to make my husband play through most of it while I watch if I want to write the fic I have in mind.

[identity profile] sg-betty.livejournal.com 2008-12-02 07:34 am (UTC)(link)
Very fun! They didn't even have to work up a sweat. Yea! Smart people!
(I've got the portal song going in my head noe-good thing I like it a lot...)

[identity profile] ultranos-fic.livejournal.com 2008-12-02 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
They make this stuff look easy. :)

How did I never see this before?! Oh this is cute. Very much creative problem solving. Their characters are so right here.

Eh, it was buried in LeapGate for awhile before I rescued it. So don't feel too bad. (I am SUCH A BAD FIC MOMMY)

Oh, you know the Wonder Twins are all about the creative problem solving. :)

(WHY do I not have a Sam and Daniel icon?! MADNESS.)
